2024 Statement from Rev. Dolberry

Chair of BCAMEC Christian Social Action Committee

The United States of America is a nation founded on democracy. The word democracy comes from the Greek words demos and kratos. Demos means people and kratos means power. Therefore, our

country was founded on people power. We, the people with the power, decide who runs this country, our states, cities, townships, school boards, library boards and so on. We the people decide the laws that govern this nation and everyone in it.

In order for we, the people to make decisions, to exercise our power, we must VOTE. Voting is central to democracy! As a matter of fact, voting is to democracy what what fairness is to justice, what Jesus is to eternal life. You can’t have one without the other.  You can’t have the latter without the former.

In these perilous times, it's not enough to just say vote!! We have to be clear and very clear. We the people have to be specific in our instructions each and every time we vote. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist. It’s very simple. There are two forms of government on the November 5th ballot. Democracy or people power and  Autocracy, where the power is in the hands of one person. Let me break it down a step further. It’s either we or he.  That’s it. that’s all!!

There are many nominees for offices across this nation, including Michigan, who favor autocracy.  If elected, they will overrule the people’s choice and declare the loser the winner. January 6th 2021 was just a dress rehearsal. It was nothing compared to what could happen if we lose our democracy. Roe V Wade was just the beginning of overturning the law of the land.  It will get worse.

Please vote for those who uphold the virtues of democracy, justice, righteousness, peace, love & compassion for the least of these. Please vote for those who have a heart to build instead of tearing down. Of course, please pray that democracy and the rule of law will be the winner in all elections. And when you get up off your knees, consider being an advocate for democracy by volunteering during the 2024 primary and general election.

Let’s choose to build a stronger democracy, stronger community, a stronger state and a stronger country, together, to the glory and honor of our God! In that vein, we will collaborate with our sister church, Bethel Ann Arbor, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and community organizations who have a mind to build.
